Lynne Cohen

Lynne Cohen (1944-2014) was born in Racine, Wisconsin and began her artistic career in printmaking and sculpture. She studied at the University of Wisconsin, where she received her Bachelor’s degree in 1967. During this time, Cohen also studied for a year at the Slade School of Fine Art in London and began making her first photographs. She later went on earn her Master’s degree from Eastern Michigan University and taught there as well.  In 1973, Cohen moved to Ottawa, Canada and continued to teach, photograph, and exhibit her work.  While an artist in residence at Light Work (Syracuse University) in 1988, Cohen published her first book, Occupied Territory. Lynne Cohen has exhibited widely across North America and Europe, conducted numerous workshops, and received awards such as the Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts in 2005.  Cohen had been based in Montreal since 2005, but died in Toronto on May 13, 2014.
