Annie Hsiao-Ching Wang

Artist Annie Hsiao-Ching Wang was born in Taipei, Taiwan in 1972. She received her PhD in Art from the University of Brighton in the UK. She can be found year-round intensely focused on issues related to the female identity and creativity in her photography, oil paintings, mixed media art, and art instruction. She is not only a professional artist and director of Ching Tien Art Space, but also an assistant professor at the Department of Arts and Design at the National Dong Hwa University.

Recently, her artwork went viral and prompted numerous reports and great interest abroad. “In these photos, Wang asserts her active role in the making of another life, reframing motherhood as a grand creative endeavor,” says The New Yorker. She also garnered appreciation from the BBC who said her works “change and transcend the cliché of motherhood and the most valuable thing is to show the positive side of motherhood from her own experience. Taiwan’s “Journal of Taipei Fine Arts Museum” dedicated her artworks in 2020, and affirmed that “she transformed the heavy motherhood into an unconventional art practice, presenting a very unique artistic creation, which opened up a new path for Taiwanese photography.”  The Chinese publication Portrait Magazine ranked Annie Wang as one of the top 25 most influential persons of 2018 as well.

Inspired by her personal experience with becoming a mother, Wang’s works have been admired internationally. Wang also won the Judges’ Special Award by the Taiwan Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2012, and her artwork was selected to represent Taiwan for traveling exhibitions to more than 20 countries around the world between 2014 and 2016. Moreover, she was invited to exhibit her work at the 2007 Manchester Photography Festival in the UK, the 2012 Novosibirsk International Festival of Contemporary Photography in Russia, the Yes Taiwan: 2012 Taiwan Biennial, the 2013 Ulsan International Festival in Korea, the 2018 Kaohsiung Photo and Taipei Art District Festival in Taiwan, the 2019 Biennial Photography of Geneva in Switzerland, the 2020 Festival Images Vevey in Switzerland and The Photoville Festival in New York, the 2021 Daegu Photo Biennale in Korea, “Aesthetics of Identity” in Peru, I Belong to This” in London, the 2022 Photolux Festival in Italy, International Festival of photography in Australia and SHERO” at the Tainan Art Museum in Taiwan. Also, the 2023 AIPAD in New York and The Mesnographies International Festival of Photography in France.
